Corner to Corner Crochet-C2C Mesh Shawl- Free Pattern

I named this Corner to Corner crochet Mesh Shawl the Rhubarb Shawl, simply named after the yarn colour. I feel the yarn is the highlight of this mesh shawl, and I really, truly love the result. It made designing this C2C Mesh Shawl exciting.

I have always wanted to make a triangle shawl. I know… there are many things I have always wanted to make, and I am gradually getting to them. After designing the C2C Reversible Prayer Wrap, that desire intensified.

However, I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted it made, but I did know that being the first triangle shawl I designed, it needed to be simple yet lovely.

That decision was made for me as soon as I got the Tweedle Dee yarn by Lion Brand yarn.

This Mesh shawl is lovely accessory for fall. Easily worn with a dress, wrapped around the shoulder or neck.

The Yarn

The Tweedle Dee yarn is light worsted, medium 3. As yet, this is not a well known yarn. I was ‘window shopping’ on Joann online store when I saw it. It captivated me so much I just had to try it.

It is machine washable as it is made from acrylic (75%) and cotton (25%) fibers, it also has wonderful stretch to it and does not split. It is basically 2 colours twisted together- 3 strands of the dark colour and one strand of white which creates a captivating spiral look. Almost all the colours it comes in are vibrant and bold.

The yarn has a jeans texture to it; not the softest of yarns. However, it makes for a sturdy material and once wet blocked, it becomes a soft and squishy material with wonderful drape.

One ball is 5.3oz/150g, 310yd/285m. For this pattern 2 balls will take you up to row 65. Then you decide if you’d like to add 1 more ball to complete the mesh rows and make the edging and tassels.

Construction

As I said, I wanted to make a simple but outstanding design. You would agree with me that Tweedle Dee yarn is already ‘busy’. It is the highlight of this pattern. The triangle shape embedded in the shawl gives a subtle illusion.

So I figured a way to make a mesh from the C2C- what a superb contrast it is to the solid blocks. There is nothing mind nerving about making the C2C mesh. It is as simple as can be, all you need do is remember how many chains to make per mesh. Gosh, can you imagine all the design possibilites?

The outer edge is in solid C2C; this gives a good base to work the picot stitches along them.

Finished size (blocked):

28 inches tall / 63.5 inches wide, without tassels

Gauge: 7 blocks is 4 inches

Stitches/Abbreviation:

  • C2C MESH- corner to corner crochet mesh. TUTORIAL HERE
  • SC- single crochet
  • DC- double crochet
  • SL ST- slip st
  • Picot– slip st in space, chain 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook, slip st in space.

You’ll need:

  • 2-3 balls, light worsted, medium 3 yarn. In this patterns, Lion Brand yarn, Tweedle Dee; 5.3oz/150g, 310yd/285m. Colour- Rhubarb
  • 4.5mm hook
  • tapestry needle

IMPORTANT Note:

To begin, make rows 1 as usual- Chain 6, DC in 4th chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains. From row 2 to the end, increase the side (edges) blocks ONLY by working Chain 7, DC in 5th chain from hook, DC in remaining chains.

Corner to Corner Crochet- C2C Mesh Shawl- Free Pattern

Follow THIS CHART to begin

Edging

At the end of Row 68, turn

Row 69: Slip st in 1st st, ch 3, SC in same st, SC in next, 2SC in space.

*DC in next space, 2HDC in next space. repeat from * across.

After the last 2HDCs at the end, HDC in 2 sts, SC in next, Sl st in space, Ch 3, Sl st in same space. Continue to working on the side.

Side Edging

*SC 4 in next 2 blocks, PICOT in space. repeat from * to bottom of shawl.

2SC in block, Ch 3, 2SC on other side of block, PICOT. repeat from * across. At the end, do not PICOT in the last space, make SC instead, 2SC in last block, Slip st in Ch 3 space. Snip yarn with long tail to weave in.

Wet block your shawl.

Make 3 tassels, attach to the corners. For longer tassels use a wider surface.
