Crochet Newborn Trolls Hat- Free Pattern

Well now, wouldn’t this Newborn Trolls Hat make for a cute photo prop? I didn’t think the day would come when I’d make a troll hat, but here we are. And I’ll say it’s one of the cutest yet.

Even though I’ve seen a couple of these hats, I never thought I’d end up making one. But I have my neighbour to thank, who is expecting a child soon.

In fact, she had asked me to make one for her older child over a year ago, but for some reason I just wasn’t keen on it. When she asked me again this time, I could not refuse her. And though she doesn’t crochet, she gave me a wonderful tip that led me to shape the hat the way I did.

So, I really have her to thank for this newborn trolls hat. I wouldn’t have designed it otherwise. Obviously, this is a girl’s hat but you could use a band in place of a ribbon to make it suitable for a boy. In fact, you could do without the ‘hair’.

It’s ok if you sell items you made using LM patterns. And I’d really love it if you mentioned it was from LM.
And please, do not sell or mass produce LM patterns- (the only exception is if you are donating the handmade items to charity)

Thanks. You can read more on LM policy here.

Make the fringes/hair

Note: Your bottom fringes should be about 2-3 inches taller than the top of the hat, as you’ll still need to trim.

I recommend starting the fringes on the DC rows and down the hat by attaching yarn in the front loops. I made fringes in the SC front loops as well but found it to be bulky, so I took them out.

After making the fringes, brush, brush, brush till you have a mass of curly strands. Then tie with ribbon.

Lay out ribbon, place hat with the back facing up, tie twice. Turn hat to front, tie again and make a bow. Trim hair.

Now sew the ears on

And the hat is ready!
