Native Print Drawstring Bag- Free Crochet Pattern for Girls
The Native Print Drawstring Bag is one of my favourite patterns. One of the many things I love about crochet is how an image in your head can come to life by the skillful use of a hook and string, and I am constantly amazed at the results of those ‘head images’.

I’m African and we have a lot of prints in our native textile attires which we call Ankara. This textile fabric can be sewn into dresses or skirts or anything your cfreative mind allows for.
Some of the designs on this Ankara are so intricate you would feel as though you were staring at a heiroglyphic writing; and if you;re anything like an idea hunting, motif searching pattern designer you would ifnd them fascinating.
So I wanted to mimic one of those designs, though a very basic one. One of the things that make those Ankara stunning are the vibrant colours they sometimes come in.
Combining the colours in this design was an experiment, as I was not certain they would blend nicelym but I am so glad to have been proven wrong. I just love the pop of colour on this Native Print Drawstring Bag.
You could decide to make this with or without a handle- use it as a gift bag, a purse to carry around on small errands, a fashion accessory for your girls to take to ‘tea parties’.
This design is basic Tapestry Crochet and you will need to know how to change colours. The PDF of this pattern includes a colour changing tutorial.

Important Tip:
- Since Double Crochet stitches are generally looser, you want to work yours tight. This will ensure that the yarn carrying does not peek through your stitches.
- Also, just before changing the yarn/colour, ensure to pull it tight through the stitches before making the second yarn over.
- Let’s say you’re on round 13 and round 14 starts with a new colour, you want to make the last yarn over on the last DC with the new colour for the round 14. This will create a smooth transition of colour.
